Guardrails serve to prevent a car from moving off the road edge, colliding with massive obstacles and structures located on the edge and and within the road's clear zone, or to prevent a vehicle from crossing the median, colliding with oncoming traffic. This structure protects vehicles from collision and serves as an effective tool for preventing road traffic accidents.
An important feature of the design of a specific line of guardrails is the presence of a detachable console, which improves the kinematics of the barrier’s and vehicle’s interaction in the event of an accident, thus ensuring the safe return of the vehicle back onto the road after colliding with the barrier. During a collision with the guardrail, the beam, along with the console, detaches from the post, which prevents the car from "diving" under the beam, saving passenger's lives.
